The History of ELSA the Netherlands

ELSA the Netherlands was established in the late 1980s, shortly after the international network began expanding. Dutch law students recognized the value of an international platform that could complement their academic studies with practical and cross-border experiences.

The first local ELSA groups were created in major university cities such as: Leiden, Amsterdam and Utrecht.

During the 1990s, ELSA the Netherlands became more structured and aligned with the international ELSA framework. The establishment of a national board to coordinate activities across local groups and the expansion to more Dutch universities offering law programs were key developments.

In the 2000s, ELSA the Netherlands experienced significant growth in both membership and scope, as local groups expanded to nearly all major law faculties. More partnerships were formed with law firms, NGOs, and academic institutions. ELSA the Netherlands also began hosting larger national and international events, including conferences that attracted participants from across Europe (ICE).

Today, ELSA the Netherlands is a well-established national group within ELSA International, with thousands of members across multiple local groups. This national group is known for its active participation in ELSA International projects (e.g. ROLE).

As for the ELSA the Netherlands community, we continue to promote its core vision:
“A just world in which there is respect for human dignity and cultural diversity.”
